My Journey Into DAWless Music Production β Gear, Workflow & Why It Matters
Mar 18, 2025
If you’ve seen myYouTube channel or interacted with me in person, you probably know I’m a huge nerd—especially when it comes to audio. So, for those who share the same obsession, it should come as no surprise that I’m diving deeper into hardware and DAWless production.
In this article, I want to break down my new rig, how I plan to use it, and why I’m moving toward a hybrid DAWless workflow. Hopefully, you’ll discover some cool gear along the way.
How I Got into Music Production
Before we get into why I’m shifting toward DAWless production, let’s take a step back and talk about how I got here.
I’ve been a musician since I was 11 years old, playing guitar, flute, baritone saxophone, and euphonium. However, music production is a relatively new passion.
To be fair, I was producing music back in high school—on my jailbroken iPhone with a cracked version of FruityLoops (FL Studio Mobile). But it wasn’t until 2022 that I really decided to take music production seriously.
The drummer in my first band, The Portals, regularly recorded his own music and pushed us to start writing and producing originals. I was hooked instantly. The process of recording, mixing, and shaping sound was fascinating, and I quickly became obsessed. So much so that I used my remaining Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to go back to school for a second degree in music production at Full Sail University.
From DAW-Only to Hardware Exploration
At Full Sail, I learned music production from a compositional standpoint using Logic Pro. One of the biggest rules? No pre-made loops or samples—we had to compose everything from scratch, usually starting with the piano.
So, for the last three years, my entire workflow was inside a DAW.
That changed in Christmas 2023, when my wife bought me my first analog synthesizer—a Korg Minilogue XD. Up until then, all my instruments were VSTs, guitar, or bass. But when I got my hands on the Minilogue XD, I finally understood the power of hardware. Tweaking oscillators, shaping filters, and interacting with sound in a physical way—it changed how I thought about making music.
And that’s when the addiction to hardware began.
The SP-404MKII Changed Everything
Things escalated fast when I picked up a Roland SP-404MKII.
To be honest, at the time, I didn’t even understand what flipping samples meant. But I was obsessed with LoFi and chill beats, and every producer I followed was using the SP-404MKII to craft these insanely good tracks.
So, naturally, I had to grab one.
The SP-404MKII completely changed how I think about sound. I realized that ANY sound can become an instrument—that completely blew my mind. It also led me down an endless rabbit hole of YouTube tutorials, because let’s be real—the SP-404 isn’t exactly plug-and-play.
While going down the YouTube rabbit hole, I got hooked on DAWless jams.
What is DAWless Music Production?
DAWless production is essentially the electronic producer’s version of a jam session.
As a guitarist, I’ve always taken jamming for granted—I can just pick up my guitar, plug into an amp, and create music.
But for most electronic music producers, that’s not how it works. We’re usually tethered to a DAW, arranging loops, tweaking automation, and clicking through a grid-based workflow.
And to be fair—it makes sense. It’s way more cost-effective to start out in a DAW. You can buy Arturia’s Analog Lab V Collection ($500) and get a full suite of virtual synths for less than the price of one hardware synth.
But hardware unlocks something different. It allows you to jam in real time, resample your own sounds, and physically interact with music in a way that a mouse and keyboard just can’t replicate.
That realization changed my approach to music-making, and now, I’ve built a setup that lets me create music without being stuck in front of a computer.
My Current Rig
I recently sold my Axe-Fx III and decided to reinvest that money into hardware for my studio. Instead of just relying on digital modeling and plugins, I wanted a hands-on setup that felt more like an instrument than a computer.
So, I took advantage of Akai’s $600 sale and grabbed the MPC X SE, which is now the brain of my setup. To complement it, I picked up a TASCAM Model 12—a mixer, multitrack recorder, and USB interface all in one.
Here’s how my new setup works:
1οΈβ£ MPC X SE – The Brain of the Operation
The MPC X SE is my main sequencer, sampler, and arranger. It’s a standalone DAW built for LoFi, chill-hop, and electronic beats.
β Sequences synths, drum machines, and external gear
β Records & resamples guitar for chill-hop textures
β Layer beats and melodies without a computer
β Finger drumming + real-time automation for a performance feel
2οΈβ£ TASCAM Model 12 – The Mixer & Recorder
The TASCAM Model 12 is the glue that ties everything together.
β Live mixing of my MPC, guitar, SP-404, and synths
β Multitrack recording directly to an SD card (no DAW required)
β Hybrid workflow—easily transfers tracks into Logic Pro for mixing
β DAW controller mode for hands-on fader control in Logic
3οΈβ£ SP-404MKII – The FX & Sampling Beast
The SP-404MKII is my texture machine.
β LoFi processing on guitar and synths
β Resampling & re-chopping MPC loops
β Live FX manipulation for performances
4οΈβ£ Korg Minilogue XD – The Analog Synth
The Minilogue XD remains my go-to hardware synth.
β Sequenced via MPC for complex patterns
β Resampled into SP-404 for added warmth
β Standalone jamming for DAWless sessions
5οΈβ£ Roland TR-8S – The Groove Machine
The TR-8S gives me fat, punchy drums that blend perfectly with my MPC kits.
β Analog-modeled drum sounds
β Live jamming + resampling into the MPC
β Hands-on tweaking for beat-driven sessions
This setup feels like the future of my music production—a perfect mix of old-school, hands-on techniques with modern production power.
π₯ I’ll be documenting this entire journey on YouTube—breaking down how I use this gear in real-world production. If you’re into hardware, DAWless jamming, or just want to make music in a fresh way, stay tuned!
